7 New Anime to Watch in Summer 2018

I won't be able to keep up with the new releases from the 2018 Summer anime season, but that won't stop me from adding titles to my watch list!

I added 4 new shows & 3 movies. Here's what I think looks real good this season! 🤩

1. Kyoto Teramachi Sanjou no Holmes

Studio: Seven

Genre: Mystery

Mashiro Aoi works part time in an antique shop in Kyoto.

The shop's appraiser might look young, but he is an expert in spotting fakes. Known by his nickname Holmes, the two will solve mysteries which people bring into the shop.

While the synopsis claims Mashiro is a high school student, I get a more mature vibe from this anime about working in antiques.

I've never watched a studio Seven anime, but the animation looks like it will offer great atmosphere while showing off this shopping district in Kyoto.

2. Tsukumogami Kashimasu

Studio: Telecom Animation Film

Genre: Comedy, Supernatural, Historical

Tsukumogami are everyday objects that have become sentient after 100 years.

Japanese folklore says these tsukumogami often come alive at night, cause mischief, or escape in long festive processions.

This anime, set in a rental shop, in the Edo period, will tell the story of a brother & sister who can see and speak to these spirits who make up part of their inventory.

I'm expecting this will have a monster of the week aspect to it with the siblings solving problems for humans and spirits alike. It will probably be great for fans of the Morose Mononokean.

I'm probably most excited to give this one a watch.

3. Grand Blue Dreaming

Studio: Zero-G

Genre: Comedy, Seinen, Slice of Life

Grand Blue Dreaming is a manga series I have always meant to start reading.

Like whenever a new volume came out on digital release, I was reminded about it, only to forget again.

Now I don't need to worry about that, because I will watch this anime, & it will probably be hilarious. And I don't know that it'll be the kind of story that will leave me wanting to turn to the manga for more story.

I'm assuming here -- but this story is probably not THAT DEEP.

University freshman, Iori Kitahara, moves to his uncles beachside scuba diving shop with plans of having the best possible college life.

But instead of spending his time making good friends & meeting beautiful girls, he gets taken under the wing of the reckless, directionless, party all the time, upperclassmen. I assume they go diving at some point.

This series looks like it will be full of absurdist humor, acting a general fool, & situations taken way out of context.

4. Banana Fish

Studio: MAPPA

Genre: Gangster Drama, Action, Shoujo

Not a combination I would expect to see together.

Based on a classic manga from 1985, set in NYC.

Eiji Okamura, a Japanese photographer, gets himself wrapped up in a dangerous underground world when he meets the beautiful blonde Ash Lynx, mid rebellion from a mob boss.

I don't want to spoil the story for myself by looking into more detail. We can expect the two boys to get involved romantically, & some action packed fight scenes, but beyond that, I am not certain how heavy the subject matter gets.

I'm sure abuse in Ash's past will come into the present plot, and some widespread corruption will rear its ugly head.

On to Movies...

5. Penguin Highway

Premiere: August 17, 2018

Studio: Studio Colorido

Genre: Scifi, Fantasy

The previews of this movie look so mundanely surreal, I couldn't help but become intrigued.

The synopsis is short, but curious. A fourth-grader investigates why his town is suddenly full of penguins & how it relates to the woman from the dental clinic.

I wonder where this story will go. Is it really happening? What else is going on in the boys life? What do the penguins want? What does the dental clinic lady want?

6. Shikioriori (Flavors of Youth)

Premiere: August 4, 2018

Studio: CoMix Wave Films, Haoliners Animation League

Genre: Slice of Life, Drama, Romance

This movie looks like its gonna hit us with that bittersweet nostalgia attached to memories of young love.

I expect it will be visually stunning, but won't offer any definitive resolutions to the plot.

Again we get barely any synopsis other than a statement: time does not dull all loves.

I'm crying already. 🤦‍♀️

I have no idea who these characters are yet, but I want the best for them.

7. Non Non Biyori Movie: Vacation

Premiere: August 25, 2018

Studio: Silver Link

Genre: Slice of Life, Comedy

I watch everything Non Non Biyori. It's one of my favorite anime/manga franchises & Renge is my spirit animal.

The charm of this series is country life, & the girls who live it. What results is the everyday kind of comedy that ensues when living your best life surrounded by friends. In this movie, the girls win a tropical beach vacation & take the whole gang along.

If you're up to date on the manga, you've already read this story arc. If you haven't read the manga it'll be new material. Yay! And if you've never watched or read anything Non Non Biyori before, you could probably watch this movie and still be able to thoroughly enjoy it.

There is very little backstory you need to enjoy this character driven story.

However, I would suggest you watch Non Non Biyori Repeat (the superior season) as well because its hard not to fall in love with these characters.

What are you watching this season?

Thanks for reading!
